Health & Safety Policy — Gardener Stockwell
Purpose: This Health and Safety policy sets out the commitments and working arrangements of Gardener Stockwell to protect employees, clients, visitors and the public while delivering quality landscaping and maintenance. The policy applies to all operations across our gardening service area and to all staff, temporary workers and subcontractors engaged to carry out lawncare, planting, pruning and grounds maintenance.Scope: The policy covers routine horticultural tasks, seasonal works, site set-up, vehicle and trailer use, and waste handling. As a Stockwell gardener and local gardening company, we emphasise preventing harm through competent planning, safe systems of work and clear communication. This document complements day-to-day risk management without relying on specific legal citations.
Responsibilities: Management retains overall accountability and will ensure resources, training and supervision are available. All employees have a duty to work safely, report hazards and use protective equipment. Key responsibilities include:
- Managers: maintain risk assessments, allocate duties, and ensure safe plant and vehicle maintenance.
- Supervisors: issue method statements and confirm competence for specialist tasks.
- Operatives: follow instructions, use personal protective equipment and stop unsafe work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Assessment: For every project, be it routine hedge trimming or complex landscaping, a written risk assessment will be prepared. The assessment will identify hazards such as manual handling, working at height, noise, vibration and traffic interaction. Controls will be proportionate and practical to the size of each job.
Training and Competence
Training: Staff will receive induction training, job-specific instruction and refresher sessions. Training covers tool operation, safe use of chemicals, fire safety, first aid awareness and vehicle safety. Evidence of qualifications, where required, will be kept up to date and matched to the tasks carried out by the Gardener in Stockwell team.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and equipment: Appropriate PPE such as gloves, eye protection, hi-visibility clothing, hearing protection and cut-resistant trousers will be provided and maintained. All power tools, ride-on mowers, chainsaws and trailers are inspected before use and subject to routine servicing. Faulty equipment will be removed from service until repaired.
Hazardous Substances, Tools and Machinery
Substances: Chemicals, fuels and pesticides are stored securely in labelled containers and used according to the manufacturer instructions. Safe handling procedures and spill response measures are part of operative training. The gardener team follows sensible substitution and minimisation of hazardous materials where possible.
Operational Controls: When operating noisy or vibrating equipment, jobs are planned to reduce exposure time. Work near pedestrians or on roadside verges includes clear barriers, signage and, where necessary, traffic management. Public safety is reinforced through cordons and advance warning to neighbours when appropriate.

Emergency Procedures and Incident Reporting
Emergency response: First aid boxes are available on site and designated first-aiders are identified for each shift. All incidents, injuries, near-misses and dangerous occurrences are recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence. Reporting encourages openness so lessons learned feed into training and risk assessments.Contractors and Subcontracting: Where external contractors are engaged, they will be required to demonstrate compatible safety standards and adequate insurance. Coordination arrangements ensure that responsibilities are clear when multiple parties operate on the same site. The Stockwell gardening company model insists on mutual co-operation to secure a safe workplace.
Welfare: Suitable welfare facilities are provided for longer jobs, including access to drinking water and rest arrangements. Staff are encouraged to manage fatigue, take regular breaks and to report any health concerns that may affect fitness for work.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement: Health and safety performance is monitored through site inspections, audits and regular toolbox talks. This policy is reviewed at planned intervals and following significant changes in work activity or after an incident. We commit to continual improvement and to adopting straightforward best practice measures that reduce risk while supporting efficient gardening services in Stockwell and the surrounding service area.
Statement of Commitment: Gardener Stockwell is committed to maintaining a safe working environment and to ensuring that all reasonable steps are taken to protect people and property. Everyone working with or for the company has a role to play in achieving this. By adhering to the principles set out in this policy, we will deliver professional, safe and reliable grounds and garden care. This policy is endorsed by senior management and applies to all operations until superseded.
